In
the Lycian language Kaş was known as Habesos or Habesa, Alexander the Great
change the name to Antiphellos and the city prospered as an important port
through Hellenistic and Roman times.

The old village streets now house a variety of traditional handicraft
shops. Uzun Çarşı (pretty street) leads up to a monument of ancient Lycian
architecture, the Lions Tomb, a 4th century BC. sarcophagus richly decorated
with sculptured carving. Situated on the west side of town stands a hellenistic
period amphitheatre still in use today.
